As Catholics, we hold the special belief that Marriage is one of the Sacraments of our Faith instituted by the Lord Himself. Those who are baptized Catholic and who profess to be Catholic have a serious moral and spiritual obligation to celebrate their marriage within the Catholic Church in order for it to be considered valid and binding. If a Catholic chooses to marry "outside the Church" without the proper permission from the bishop, that marriage is considered invalid and also prevents the Catholic party from receiving the other Sacraments of our Faith until they enter into a valid marriage within the Church. If you know of someone who is Catholic and who is planning on getting married, please remind them of this important teaching of our Faith.
